Tagged! 7 Random Facts

posted by Mama Hope | February 12th, 2009 in Daily Meanderings

OK, so in typical fashion I am holding up this meme with a delayed response so I better get to it!

I was tagged by Jessica at GreenMamma.org for the “7 Random Facts” meme. Similar to the Facebook 25 Facts meme, which, of course I also haven’t responded to yet. But, hey!, 7 is less than 25, right? So this oughta be simple. Except… I’m not good at editing down. What if I come up with 8?

Er, here goes:

7 Facts About Myself

  1. Hmmm, fact number one: I’m kinda insecure and these internet meme doo-hickeys make me feel like I don’t have enough friends. LOL! I guess that’s diving in there pretty deep isn’t it? But it’s a fact!
  2. I cook less than my husband. I guess today is all about honest admissions isn’t it? I do enjoy cooking, especially when it’s for a group of friends, and I also love menu planning. But I *hate* chopping vegetables. And food processors, though I use them when doing stir-fry’s, seem too wasteful to me (of the electricity that is). So hubby cooks more, even though I’m an SAHM. I feel terribly guilty about it (can you tell?) because it seems like it must be in some kinda SAHM rule book that you have to do the cooking. What can I say, I manage the finances and do the laundry? LOL. And I make the herbal remedies and the butt cream, hee hee!
  3. Geez that was too many facts in the last one. Let’s make this one simple: my blood lines are Northern Italian, Flemish, and Filipina. That’s how come I can be part Asian and still have two blond kids and one with blue eyes. Doh! Too many facts again!
  4. I know how to design databases with entity relationship modeling tools, and how to code them in Transact-SQL. Haven’t done that in a while, but betcha’ I still could. Bizarre, huh?
  5. I give piano lessons. It’s just a part time thing, but it’s fun and it keeps me in touch with the good old days when I used to practice Bach inventions obsessively.
  6. long hair up-do with pencil
    My up-do, complete with pencil
  7. Books are my weakness. If you’ve hung around hippie dippie bébé much you prolly already guessed this. And curse Terina of my mommy group for introducing me to Paperback Swap! Now that I’m a member, all the books I’ve wanted to get rid of forever have been transformed into books I want and like, hence more books on my list of things to read! Hubby is ever patient, but I think I may need to put him back on “approval duty”. That is, “I may not acquire another book unless I first get approval from hubby.” Anyway, if you’ve never heard of it, Paperback Swap is great (kinda, *wink*). Mail away your old books and get credits to use for new ones shipped to you for free, that you pick out from their list of nearly 3 million. Essentially $2.50 a book (the cost of postage to send the old, boring ones out of your house and into a new happy home). I digress.
  8. And the number seven fact about me is: I use pencils to hold up my hair. There. A perfect simplistic ending to my list. (Now I have to take a picture.)

Ta da! If you’d like to read a little more about me, try these:

I tag…

Oh, oh, don’t stop reading! Read about these bloggers and WAHM’s I admire first!

(I’m actually pretty happy to go through this exercise, thanks to Green Mamma! I’ve been terribly negligent about keeping up with blogs and blog folk I like and respect, and I’ve been meaning to jumpstart more of a habit. So this was a good excuse to visit some old and new inspirations…)

I tag you, mamas!

Jeska at Moonstar Minus Politics - Jeska is a raw foodie with excellent taste in crafty things and general natural family living type things. I’m excited to start reading her more as her family is now on the hunt for an RV which they plan to purchase after they sell their house and before they hit the road for an adventure in “roadschooling” with their two (possibly three if Jeska gets her wish) kids. So we’ll stand by to see what happens!

Angela at Rahn Family Blog - I am particularly thankful to Jessica (Green Mamma) for tagging me if for no other reason than it prompted me to finally read up on how an old twitter friend, Angela aka VeggieMom is doing. Angela is an extremely wise and spiritual mama who has gone through a lot of transitions lately. She’s working more as a healer these days (a physical therapist) and writing a bit less on her blog. But she did introduce us to Yo Gabba Gabba, one of the few TV shows I’ll let little D watch (besides his Shimajiro and Baby Signs videos). And she has these great posts up on a sample vegetarian meal plan and a sure fire way to cheer up when you’re blue. Rock on, Angela, if you’re reading this!

Elizabeth at Three Channels - OK, Elizabeth is just hysterical. Very funny, intelligent stuff. I discovered her awhile back and I confess I haven’t stayed on top of reading her (um, do I hear an echo in here?) I just buzzed by her site and read a couple of her more amusing observations about children. Definitely check her out: fa-hunny!

Stephanie, Green SAHM - I’m really impressed by Stephanie and how she manages to stay on top of both her websites (that I know of, maybe she has more!). Her Green SAHM blog is a great running idea list for living green and she also runs Home with the Kids which is a popular, established site jam-packed with information on all aspects of running a business at home, including job ideas and how to avoid scams. I have only glossed the surface of it, and haven’t even checked out the WAHM forums there yet.

Rebecca at K2P2.com - Rebecca just wrote this laugh out loud funny piece, Trying To Figure Out My Husband. It reminds me so much of my son, who is maddeningly absentminded like Rebecca’s husband. Since we’re all ex or current computer programmers over here, I’ve noticed Rebecca’s tales strike a chord with various slices of weirdness in our geeky family! Oh, and if you knit, she owns Froebe Fibers, where she sells these totally gorgeous skeins of hand-dyed yarn. Hi, Rebecca!

That reminds me of the fact I forgot to write: I started a crocheted sweater for my son 9 months ago that I still haven’t sewn up and finished. Um, since it’s a 12 month sweater and he’s 13 months now I guess I’d better finish! I’m such a fair-weather crafter!

Dawna from Inside Out - Dawna is an extremely energetic writer who is not afraid to speak her mind. It’s kinda exciting just reading her post titles; they have some sass! She’s been extremely supportive of my writing here, which really does help keep me going. Thanks, Dawna! She hits a lot of good points particularly in her post, What’s the Point of Being Chemical Free, especially with regard to one of our family’s favorite gripes, that against the dairy industry’s one-sided “research” supporting cow’s milk as a healthy food for all age levels.

Ahmie, Fire Breathing Dragon Mama - Ahmie has a little Delano of her own, just six months older than my Little D! We have weirdly a lot of other things in common, too. I had a waterbirth, was married outdoors, with a ceremony we wrote ourselves, including a lasso ceremony, and we go to a Unitarian Universalist church. All just like Ahmie’s family. Weird, huh?

What fun this has been! Feel free to follow this little meme as you like it: take it or leave it as it were! But I hope we’ve all enjoyed discovering a few more online destinations. Be well!

Love,

Mama Hope

  1. Hey there Mama Hope, I really enjoyed reading your list. I too share your guilt over not being the primary “cooker” in the house, but the way I see it, I have been nursing my daughter for 2 years and was her primary food source for at least 12 months of the last 2 yrs. Meanwhile, I try not to feel so bad about being a stay at home mom who hates to cook because I reason that I am our home’s CEO and I need to delegate tasks to my loved ones (and it helps when those tasks are ones that I do not enjoy or have no talent with).

Also, I share your love for books (two English degrees), and find that I could fill my house with books if it weren’t for my library card. Anyway, thanks for sharing your 7 random factoids and for sharing some other great blogs with us.

  2. I so hear you on #1.

I hate chopping vegtables too. Ughh! It ranks right up there with making salad. HATE it!

  3. Mommy Knows,

Glad to hear I’m not alone! And I hate making salad too! Although I have to admit salad spinners are pretty righteously fun.

    Green Mamma,

Thanks! Yeah it’s funny to think you’re working hard to feed your kids when you’re just sitting there doing nothing (making milk) or stuffing your face (adding raw materials)!

My unfortunate problem with library cards is that I have developed a dependence on underlining and writing in the margin for comprehension! Maybe one day I’ll reach book nirvana and will break my addiction…

Thanks so much for tagging me! It was truly just what I needed to kick start my desire to begin keeping up with a handful of moms “more better,” as it were. Now if I can just get my routines going smoothly!

    Be well!

  4. It’s not so much the cooking I hate, it’s the THINKING OF WHAT TO MAKE. Also, the “What’s for dinner?”"I HATE that! Yuck! I’m NEVER eating that!” completely de-moralizes me and I defend myself with bitchy behavior and snappy comments — which every parent aspires to do — so that I just want to crawl under my feather blanket and eat popcorn for my dinner and let them fend for themselves.

But I knew if I did that, they (the 7 and 9 year old) would satisfy themselves with macaroni and cheese or top ramen for the rest of their lives. So I mentally drag myself from the blankets and make veggies and rice or quinoa, and put on a raincoat to their hurtful comments; the kids complain through dinner and my husband threatens to make fish heads for dinner next time.

    Ahh. The family dinner.

  5. LOL! I used to sing a song about fish heads to my little brother and sister to taunt them when we were kids!!

  6. I also do not cook very often and I stay at home too. Don’t claim the guilt–remember you are making the butt paste.

I have spent the majority of my life using the pencil hair technique. Since I just chopped it all off after reaching my 10 inch goal, it’ll be a long time before I can do so again, but I will do it again!

    Glad I’m not alone!

  7. Yeah, man, that’s my new mantra: “Remember the butt paste.” Thanks, Elizabeth!

  8. I like to cook for friends and family too, but the every day cooking just gets on my nerves. If I could get the hubs to cook, I’d never cook again, I think.

  9. Maybe you should work on that, Allie, lol! In between the moments I’m feeling guilty I remind myself that hubby does love cooking. I’ve found that most men do, once they give it a go. Something about that relationship to their stomach I guess!
